Hello, my name is Phil Moore. I’m a golf instructor, club maker, and golf writer. I’ve owned and operated my own successful golf club fitting, building and repair business for over 20 years. I currently own Phil’s Custom Golf Shop located in “The Nest” building at Goose Creek Golf Club.
I’m a member of the International Clubmakers’s Guild and the Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals. I’ve also written three popular books on golf, The Mad Science of Golf: On moving past golf industry hype and learning to play better golf – published in 2007, Understanding Golf: Learn to significantly lower your average score without hitting the ball farther, changing your swing, or buying expensive golf clubs – published in 2012, and Rethinking Golf Clubs: An inside perspective on the confusing and very misunderstood world of golf clubs – published in 2019.
While I work with golfers at every level, I most enjoy teaching average or even beginning players. For that reason, I keep my instructional and club making rates very affordable. For detailed information about the services I offer, please visit my website PhilsGolf.com.
I would certainly appreciate the opportunity to be your golf instructor, your club maker, or both!
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that most players take golf lessons with the hope of developing a better golf swing and, as a result, lower their average score. In my second book, Understanding Golf, I wrote that to significantly and permanently lower your average score you need to do more than simply change your golf swing. Golf is a game that is “played”. Becoming a better “player” requires that you improve not only your ball-striking skills, but also your five “playing skills” – Shot Selection, Club Selection, Intention, Setup Position, and Swing Focus. In other words, for significant long-term improvement, you need to become a better all-around golfer – not just the same golfer with a different looking swing. Helping each student become a better “golfer” is my mission as an instructor; and the reason I refer to myself as a golf instructor as opposed to simply a swing instructor. When helping a student improve their ball-striking, I don’t teach a particular method or swing technique. Instead, I focus exclusively on improving my student’s ability to consistently make good quality contact. I’m a firm believer in the old adage – the golf ball doesn’t care how you swing, it only responds to the clubface at impact. Accepting that everyone does and should swing differently, I strive to help each of my students better understand their own swing and discover their own way to consistently make good quality contact. I’ve found that through working with my students natural swing motion, rather than against it, the process of improvement is greatly accelerated. I strive to teach each of my students how to significantly and permanently lower their average score through helping them with their equipment, improving their ball-striking skills, expanding their understanding of the game, and developing their five playing skills.Schedule Appointment
My Club Fitting Philosophy
When fitting and building golf clubs, I have two objectives. The first is to determine the club specifications (Grip size and type; Shaft length, weight and flex; Club Head design, loft, lie-angle and face-angle) that will provide my client with the ability to make square and centered contact and send the ball on a playable trajectory the highest percentage of time. I do this with every club in the bag – putter through driver.
The second objective is to determine the specific set composition (specific combination of wedges, irons, hybrids, and fairway metals) that will provide that particular client with the ability to best control his or her distances.
If you read my latest book, Understanding Golf Clubs, you know that I don’t believe in expensive brand-name golf clubs. I believe in golf club specifications. I believe you should be using golf clubs that are built to the specifications that best compliment YOUR size, strength, basic swing motion, and ability. In other words, I believe you should be playing with golf clubs that are easy for YOU to use; golf clubs that make the game easier for YOU to play.
Fortunately, most golf club specifications can be altered. If needed, I can usually make those alterations quickly and for a minimal cost.
